Inspiration: Angelina Stroganova

One of my biggest inspirations is a concept artist Angelina Stroganova. Her main style is the retro-futuristic theme with humans/robots and neon lights, which is something I would like to create as well. As I mentioned before, this sci-fi style has become very popular mainly because of the lights and their effect on the emotions of the scene.

In the scene below we can see how the neon pink and blue lights give the set the sci-fi atmosphere but the red light gives it the drama which that moment needs. Red is the colour of danger, which enhances the guns and the shot from the gun that is right in the middle of the scene. Although we do not know if the character who is shooting is the "good" or "the bad" one, it is obvious that he is an important character.


The use of red light is also in this digital painting and it gives the character that dangerous look again. However, in this picture, we would think that this character is on the side of villains because of the additional green light that is usually connected with villains, for example, the Maleficent or Voldemort.




Although she used green light for this character as well, the additional magenta light makes it seem less evil, because it is a colour of harmony and balance. The colours work together really well because they are complementary to each other.


When it comes to her character design, in the picture below we can see a great use of shapes even though her characters are not very stylised and they have mostly realistic proportions.


Her variations of clothing and poses for the same character are very well made, they reflect the personality of the character and we are almost able to see the way they would move in the game.

Learning 3D modelling: additional sources I used

For creating 3D characters simple skills in Maya and Zbrush are not enough. For the character to be modelled properly, I need to understand the workflow and rules of 3D modelling, sculpting and texturing. To do that, I used books, a written work by Elisabet Heikkilä, and different tips by 3D artists I found online. The books I found in the library helped me to understand the basics of modelling and sculpting, even though they were a bit old for the industry now. The 3D industry goes forward too quickly and that is probably why I couldn't even find enough books about it. To publish a book costs a lot and in this industry, it is not very relevant after a couple of years. However, I found a lot of important knowledge about the basics of modelling there. The dissertation by Elisabet Heikkilä is a real treasure. Learning Zbrush

When I first opened Zbrush, I knew, it was not going to be easy. It looked so different from Maya, that I asked my friend who does Game Art to at least explain the basics. To be 100% honest, his way of explaining was quite confusing, so I went on Lynda.com to look for some tutorials. I admit, I am not easy when it comes to tutorials and even when learning Maya or Adobe Illustrator using Lynda.com tutorials I struggles. I find them really slow, mostly because of my problems with keeping attention to spoken word and constant tiredness. What I found better, were tutorials on youtube by professional artists, who did not do whole lessons about how to work in Zbrush, but they did just basic information for beginners and then different tips and tricks, or different talks while sculpting.
