Research: Wild West Challenge

Image
As a part of my research, I read an interview with the top three character designers that entered the competition Wild West Challenge. In this challenge, the participants had to create a fully rendered character model in the theme of Wild West in 8 weeks. In the interview, I found out much interesting information about their way of thinking, the work process and what they find important. I wrote down interesting things they said that could advise me while creating my own character. Jared Chavez "My first priority for this piece was to have it completed by the end of the challenge." "I made sure that I set up a timeline and I stuck pretty close to that in order to make sure I had a finished piece." "I started by gathering a large amount of reference." "Take it as a chance to learn something new, push yourself out of your comfort zone." "Meet new people and learn from their work." "Remember to have fun."...

Work plan

For my final project, I needed to create a work plan week by week so I can keep up with my work and not be too much behind. According to this plan, the hardest part is now in front of me and that is doing theoretical research and learning how to work in ZBrush, which is a software I have never worked with before. 1 24.9. Introduction 2 1.10. Generating ideas for the final project, researching methods 3 8.10. Tutorial with Cathy – the project was chosen 4 15.10. Proposal and presentation of the project done 5 22.10. Presenting my project for classmates 6 29.10. Researching the question, generating ideas for the character 7 5.11. Character design sketches 8 12.11. Test modelling of details 9 19.11. Finalise character design, writing learning report 10 26.11. Face expressions, poses, character in action 11 3.12. Writing a proposal

Writing a proposal is a difficult task and before any writing, I decided to research how to write it. I needed to realise the most important points for my proposal: the structure of the proposal, the questions I am asking myself in my project, all aspects I need to research for the project, what I need to learn, how I am going to do it and most importantly what are the goals of my project. For that, I wrote down quick points and longer bullet points of how my proposal will look like: 1. Character design, modelling and texturing. 3D - Maya, ZBrush. Original character. Realistic. 2. I plan to create a 3D model of a character based on an original character that would be set in a retro-futuristic, cyberpunk style game. I want to challenge my skills and learn new techniques in 3D modelling 3. The purpose of this project is to explore the possibilities of "character". PROJECT Title: Exploring the possibilities of "character" Project Summary: A 3D model ...

Character ideas - stylised or realistic?

Image
Stylised vs realistic art has always been a topic to discuss in every field of art that include drawing/modelling. In my opinion, they both have their important place in the art industry. Different people find different things more appealing to them. Although I like both styles and the or last two years at the university I have tried to stylise my style of drawing I still keep coming back to my original realistic drawings even though I do not spend several dozens of hours doing realistic shading as I used to, due to lack of time. I have always enjoyed drawing realistic portraits and slowly rendering all small details of the skin, hair, or other textures. Hyperrealism in 3D has been mainly used in the film industry, creating fantastic animals and creatures or environments we do not have on the Earth. Because hyperrealistic models and have so many details, it was impossible to use this technique in the game industry as well. Comparison of CGI in the film The Lord O...
