Writing a proposal

Writing a proposal is a difficult task and before any writing, I decided to research how to write it. I needed to realise the most important points for my proposal: the structure of the proposal, the questions I am asking myself in my project, all aspects I need to research for the project, what I need to learn, how I am going to do it and most importantly what are the goals of my project. For that, I wrote down quick points and longer bullet points of how my proposal will look like:

1. Character design, modelling and texturing. 3D - Maya, ZBrush. Original character. Realistic.
2. I plan to create a 3D model of a character based on an original character that would be set in a retro-futuristic, cyberpunk style game. I want to challenge my skills and learn new techniques in 3D modelling
3. The purpose of this project is to explore the possibilities of "character".

PROJECT

Title: Exploring the possibilities of "character"
Project Summary: A 3D model of a character based on an original character that would be set in a retro-futuristic, cyberpunk style game.
Goals and objectives: To create a recognisable character which will easily communicate with the audience, the model’s purpose will be for a video game, it should showcase the ability to create a 3D character on a level of the industry requirements, be an addition to the portfolio

Learning 3D modelling: additional sources I used

For creating 3D characters simple skills in Maya and Zbrush are not enough. For the character to be modelled properly, I need to understand the workflow and rules of 3D modelling, sculpting and texturing. To do that, I used books, a written work by Elisabet Heikkilä, and different tips by 3D artists I found online. The books I found in the library helped me to understand the basics of modelling and sculpting, even though they were a bit old for the industry now. The 3D industry goes forward too quickly and that is probably why I couldn't even find enough books about it. To publish a book costs a lot and in this industry, it is not very relevant after a couple of years. However, I found a lot of important knowledge about the basics of modelling there. The dissertation by Elisabet Heikkilä is a real treasure. She describes all the details of creating and modelling a 3D character and I am definitely going to use it while I'll be modelling my own character next semester. The...

Learning Zbrush

When I first opened Zbrush, I knew, it was not going to be easy. It looked so different from Maya, that I asked my friend who does Game Art to at least explain the basics. To be 100% honest, his way of explaining was quite confusing, so I went on Lynda.com to look for some tutorials. I admit, I am not easy when it comes to tutorials and even when learning Maya or Adobe Illustrator using Lynda.com tutorials I struggles. I find them really slow, mostly because of my problems with keeping attention to spoken word and constant tiredness. What I found better, were tutorials on youtube by professional artists, who did not do whole lessons about how to work in Zbrush, but they did just basic information for beginners and then different tips and tricks, or different talks while sculpting.
