Character design
As I wrote in my previous blog posts, my character would be set in a game with retro-futuristic, cyberpunk aesthetic style. The style would be as photorealistic as possible, for my current and next-semester-learned skills and she would be targeted to an adult, mostly female audience, considering the fact it is a female character who is going to be fully clothed.
I decided to use a character a created a couple of years ago when I got really interested in this sci-fi style and since then she has been one of my favourite characters I have ever made.
This is the sketch I made a few years ago.
Because I had just a portrait of her, I needed to create her outfit, which was a tricky part because I wanted to create a mostly dark grey/black outfit with a few neon elements on it. And drawing black clothing is something I have never learned properly, so I took it as a challenge and created these quick sketches. I absolutely loved the fourth one, I think it has the best silhouette, looks the most appealing and also has the best functionality for her when we consider her environment. Because she is a robot, we do not have to worry about her being cold, but to make it less obvious and let her blend in, she is not wearing for example shorts. She rolls her sleeves up because she is more confident with being who she really is, so her robotic arm, which I decided to add later, is showing now (she used to hide it before) and she also doesn't cover her part of heard that shows she is not human.
This is the final design of her. I found a really good brush so I enjoyed painting it, however, I am not really happy with her face, that is completely different than it should be. I plan to re-do it and re-submit it at the beginning of the second semester as further development.
I also wanted to try how the light will look on the final render and I am quite happy with this painting. Her face is still not what I want it to be, but it is better and I am satisfied with how the light turned out, especially on the metal parts on her head and the pink rim light on her skin.
Drawing different facial expressions made me draw her face more accurately to what I want it to be, so I am quite happy with these. I think they also portray her emotions pretty well, which was also a challenge because strong human emotions are something I am not very confident when it comes to drawing.
