Mood board/colour palette

Halfway through the semester, I decided to change the idea of the character I wanted to model. Before it was supposed to be a female character for a fantasy-themed game in a medieval-inspired world, based on a book such as The Witcher is. Then I decided to change it to a futuristic, humanoid robot because I think it is more challenging when it comes to shapes, materials, more complex design and also more interesting lighting. I also think it is more my style when it comes to my artwork although I love medieval fantasy stories.

To create my character, first I started looking at different art that could inspire me. What fits the most to the style of my character is Tokyo. Tokyo is a metropole that is basically what we can call futuristic is the present. Japan has more advanced technologies than most of the world and they love them. But on the other side, there is that retro kind of aesthetic that connects these elements to the popular retro-futuristic aesthetic style people around the world love.

The most significant element of the retro-futuristic style is colourful neon lights which were very popular during the last century and now they've made comeback. Tokyo at night is a great example of these lights and combined with advertisement light boards they create the typical atmosphere.

The main colours of the neon lights are blue, purple and pink that contrast with the dark grey and blue colours of the night. That is the colour palette I chose for my project as the main inspiration when it comes to colours of the character and lighting it.

A 3D artist who uses a name Beeple is also inspired by this retro-futuristic aesthetic style. He is known by uploading a render every single day and I think his main influence on ideas are technologies and colourful light. His renders also have a grainy finish that enhances the retro-futuristic atmosphere. It looks similar to the environment the game, where my character is, would have. Plain, grey, concrete buildings, a lot of cables and wires, neon lights, half-empty streets and robots. That is my idea for the retro-futuristic city for the game.
